Indonesia’s geography is often described in numbers: 17,000+ islands, vast distances, and diverse regions. More than that, it has more than 1,300 ethnic groups. So, when we’re talking about partnerships, we need to talk about “difference” as well.

Every area has its own local wisdom, cultural norms, and ways of doing things. What works in Jakarta may not work in Papua. In one province, something that works might need to be completely changed in another.

This is why a single partnership model rarely works across Indonesia.

From my experience, the most effective collaborations are locally led. They’re based on an understanding of the local context, shaped by local people, and grounded in local knowledge. These collaborations don’t only change the way we do things. They change the way we think about things.

For international organisations, this means shifting from applying models to co-creating approaches.

Indonesia’s rich culture shapes how we work, who we work with, and what success looks like.
